A different framework: The Morgan celebrates Tarot!
from the Renaissance through contemporary art

You don’t really expect an answer on the spot, you merely put your mind in a different framework.
— Todd Alcott (The Pulp Tarot) on reading Tarot

New York’s Morgan Library & Museum has opened a spectacular exploration of Tarot’s historical legacy and artistry through the ages. I saw the show this morning, and I predict Tarot! Renaissance Symbols, Modern Visions will remain heavily-trafficked, drawing both Tarot experts and enthusiasts (who are legion these days) and anyone intrigued by the occult, the psychospiritual symbolism, and the subversive in visual art.
The exhibition, which runs through October 4, brings together all your expected heavy hitters: Pamela Colman Smith, Austin Osman Spare, Lady Frieda Harris, André Breton, Lenora Carrington, Remedios Varo, and more. The modern age is represented by popularizers such as Karen Vogel and Vicki Noble (Motherpeace Tarot), Kim Krans (The Wild Unknown Tarot), David Palladini (The Aquarian Tarot) and, of course, master teacher Rachel Pollack and exuberant sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle.
Contemporary artists of note include Betye Saar, Alison Saar, Edie Fake, and Chris Ofili. The Hilma’s Ghost duo—who, in May of last year, installed their gorgeous Tarot mural, Abstract Futures, in a midtown subway entranceway—also make an appearance in the Morgan’s show.
Covering centuries and a wide stretch of media, styles, and concerns, Tarot! gives all this bounty digestible historical and social context. If you have only a layperson’s familiarity with the cards and their meanings, you still should have an enjoyable, enlightening stay. If you’re an old hand like me, expect the excitement of both familiar artists and ones new to you whose visions set willing minds on a journey.
Be sure to allow yourself time to slowly wander the gallery and go back for a second or third look.

Gorgeous woman! You probably already know this. In case not, did you know that the Pierpont Morgan museum has some of the original Visconti-Sforza cards on display? And others that I think you can see if you ask. Not sure. :) unless the Morgan Library is the same location.
I think I'll take my granddaughter
